We hope this will serve as a useful guide for your exploration of the exciting range of life enhancement strategies currently available. Whether you want to get in shape, lose a few pounds, increase mental performance or add productive and enjoyable years to your life, the following 12 nutritional strategies reflect the latest findings in the expanding field of nutrional science.

The past several years have been full of reports of exciting research documenting the effects of growth hormone (GH) releasing formulas. In youth, natural growth hormone is abundant in the body and accounts for vital functions such as building lean muscle, growing strong bones, metabolizing body fat, maintaining skin elasticity and thick-ness, and increasing energy and sexual stamina. After the age of twenty-one, there is a noticeable decline in the release of growth hormone and the aging process begins (see chart on page 2). This subsequent decline in growth hormone levels results in increased storage of body fat, decreased muscle tone, loss of strength, decreased skin thickness, immune system malfunctions, and lowered libido and sexual performance.

"After the age of twenty-one, humans begin to lose Growth Hormone and the aging process begins."

While we are biologically programmed for this gradual loss of our natural growth hormone, the good news is that the release of GH from the pituitary gland can be efficiently and safely restored. Release of growth hormone occurs naturally every few hours from age sixteen to twenty. After age twenty-one growth hormone production by the pituitary gland continues, but its actual release into the bloodstream begins to diminish. At age twenty, males produce about 1 mg of growth hormone per day, but by age forty, this natural release of growth hormone has dropped over 50%, to less than 1/2 of 1 mg per day. Since storage and production of growth hormone doesn't guarantee the release of growth hormone, metabolic assistance in the form of a growth-hormone-releasing-agent (GHRA) is an alternative.

The discovery of de-aging humans by restoring growth hormone release was brought to public attention when Dr. Daniel Rudman, M.D., published his scientific study in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Rudman's study concluded that "Diminished secretion of growth hormone is responsible in part for the decrease of lean body mass, the expansion of adipose-tissue mass, and the thinning of the skin that occur in old age". Regarding the results of restoring GH, Dr. Rudman stated that "These changes represented the reversal of one or two decades of aging with regard to these factors. To prevent, rather than reverse the effects of aging, treatment might need to start when people are in their 30s or 40s."

"Stimulation of growth hormone after age twenty-three would seem imperative for the control of age-driven diseases"

Calling growth hormone the "youth hormone," newspapers and magazines touted the report as the most profound Fountain-of-Youth study ever conducted. By stimulating the release of one's natural growth hormone with L-ARGININE formulas, one can improve immune functions, speed the healing process, reduce susceptibility to viruses, bacteria and cancer, accelerate the healing of wounds and bone injuries, and activate macrophages. In other words, stimulation of growth hormone after age twenty-three would seem imperative for the control of age-driven diseases and age-deterioration of muscle mass with the attendant increase in body fat.

L-arginine also plays an important role in the body when injury, surgery or other physical traumas are involved. Stress on the body triggers increased use of arginine. These stresses on the body can be caused by growth and muscle increases resulting from exercise, as well as such externally related stresses as illness and injury.

During trauma, arginine enhances nitrogen reten-tion by releasing the hormones GH, IGF-1 and insulin, and by promoting creatine synthesis. Clinical studies involving stimulation of GH using free form L-Arginine have proven conclusively that L-Arginine, in formulas such as Ann de Wess Allen's M2 or Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw's POWER MAKER II, can restore GH levels in any age group with results equal or superior to those of synthetic growth hormone.

As we approach the end of the century many people are facing the unpleasant prospect of physically out-lasting their normal capacity to think and reason. It's been estimated that up to 50% of all adults will experience a noticeable decline in mental abilities when faced with such common daily tasks as manipulating words, recalling names, and maintaining concentration and focus.

To deal with this problem current research in the field of human memory is aimed at slowing down this gradual loss of higher-level cognitive functions that can appear in healthy individuals as young as fifty years of age.

"In terms of overall cognitive status, those taking Phosphatidyl-Serine had `rolled back the clock' by roughly 12 years."

In the last decade investigators discovered Phosphatidylserine (PS), a naturally-occurring phospholipid nutrient with the proven ability to improve cognitive functions and enhance mental ability.

PS is essential to the healthy functioning of the human brain where it affects an assortment of nerve cell functions, including: conduction of nerve impulses; accumulation, storage and release of neurotransmitters; the activity and number of receptors involved in synaptic discharge; and the biological maintenance of cellular "housekeeping" functions.

Double-blind controlled trials conducted in Europe and the U.S. indicate that as we age, dietary supplementation with PS can play a vital role in supporting human cognitive functions. Investigators have noted that, in terms of overall cognitive status, those taking PS had "rolled back the clock" by roughly 12 years. In other words, those subjects with a "cognitive age" equivalent to age 64 were restored, on average, to a cognitive age of 52. In the researchers' own words, "The magnitude of effect may be considered significant by many subjects and clinicians" (Crook, et al, Neuro. 41:644-649).

A second study conducted by Dr. Crook's Memory Assessment Clinic, in association with Vanderbilt University and ExPharma of Italy, studied fifty-one subjects averaging 71 years of age. At the end of the 12-week study, researchers found that the PS-treated subjects showed improvements in their abilities to:

  • Recall names of familiar persons.
  • Recall location of misplaced objects.
  • Recall details from previous day.
  • Recall details from the past week.
  • Maintain mental concentration.
  • Until recently phosphatidylserine was only found in trace amounts (1-3%) in commercial lecithins, in combination with other phospholipids such as phosphatidyl-choline, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol. Now phosphatidylserine is available in 20% (100 mg) doses in 500 mg gel caps. Phosphatidylserine has been shown to exhibit excellent bioavailability when taken orally, and is safe for long-term supplemental intake.

The brain controls all life systems, and as the brain ages, so the body follows. When any of our 10 billion brain cells malfunction or die, memories begin to fade, thinking ability declines, muscles atrophy, bones become brittle, arteries harden, the immune system weakens, coordination declines, and life begins to slip away.

Therapies to slow brain aging pay multiple dividends in that they help us to maintain our identity, while preserving the vital functions that ensure good health and vigor. While a wide variety of compounds have beneficial effects on brain aging, researchers point to Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) as one of the most potent anti-aging therapies for the brain

Researchers have shown that age-dependent brain cell changes can be slowed or prevented by treatment with Acetyl-L-Carnitine. There is solid evidence that many of the neurodegenerative changes associated with brain aging may be caused, in part, by a decline in the activity of a class of neurochemicals called Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) that provide support for the healthy functioning of brain cells, especially in the hippocampus and frontal cortex of the brain. (Molecular Brain Research, 3:55-60: 1987). Further evidence that the decline in NGF is a cause of the degeneration of brain cells comes from studies in which intracerebroventricular infusion of NGF was able to reverse both structural and behavioral deficits in aged rats. (Nature, 329:6568:1 987).

Recent studies have provided striking new evidence to explain the anti-aging benefits of Acetyl-L-Carnitine in improving cognitive and behavioral function in aging humans. Acetyl-L-Carnitine has been shown to protect heart tissues against ischemia, to improve cardiac performance, and to restore high-energy phosphate pools that contribute to the generation of energy molecules (ATP) in heart cells. Acetyl-L-Carnitine has also been shown to increase energy within neurons, to improve learning and cognitive abilities, and to improve the condition of patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

"These results imply for ALC either curative properties when given to aged subjects, or preventative properties when administered to aging ones"

Scientists have found that long-term treatment with ALC prevents the loss of choline acetyltransferase (CHAT), an enzyme that plays an essential role in learning and memory. Recently, Kalaria and Harik reported that patients with Alzheimer's disease show a 25%-to-40% decrease in this mitochondrial enzyme which plays a key role in energy production within brain cells in both the frontal and temporal cortex. This enzymatic decrease may explain the benefits for Alzheimer's patients taking ALC, as well as its benefits for normally aging persons.

They also suggested that ALC might be even more beneficial in slowing or preventing cognitive and behavioral deficits in normally-aging persons without overt signs of disease. The evidence suggests that, at a minimum, long-term treatment with ALC could stop us from getting age related neurodegenerative diseases and, at best, could slow normal aging in humans dramatically.

The scientists concluded that: "These results indicate that short term treatment with ALC is able to induce NGF production and would imply for ALC either curative properties when given to aged subjects, or preventive properties when administered to aging ones."

Most people attempt to lose weight struggling through various diets only to find that the weight lost comes back faster than it came off. This rebound effect is caused by the body either increasing its appetite for fattening foods or by decreasing it's efficiency for converting food into energy.

To deal with this dilemma, in 1995 Smart Basics introduced CitriChrome, a unique, multiple-action weight-loss formula that combines HCA (Hydroxy-Citric Acid), derived from Garcinia cambogia, with two highly potent forms of chromium.

Numerous scientific studies have shown that HCA safely and effectively curbs appetite, reduces food intake, inhibits the production of fat, and lowers cholesterol levels without side effects. HCA exerts its anti-obesity effects by safely inhibiting the body's production of a key biochemical required for the production and storage of fat. HCA also suppresses your appetite and cravings for food. HCA should be taken 20 to 30 minutes before meals to be effective, although it can remain active for several hours afterwards. Studies show that HCA is 700% more effective when taken two to three times per day than when taken only once.

Excess body fat is a component of our leading killer diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart disease and cancer. Unfortunately, recognizing the dangers of excess body fat and getting rid of it are two different issues. Most people who try to lose body fat fail because they try to limit the amount of fuel coming in by restricting calories rather than by burning off the excess fuel already in fat storage.

Scientific evidence clearly demonstrates not only the futility of caloric restriction, but also its dangers. Recent studies show that 95% of weight lost from caloric restriction is regained, largely as fat, and in some people as much as half of every pound lost is lean muscle or bone tissue, not fat.

A safe alternative to caloric restriction is to increase the burning rate of fat already stored. In addition to a regular program of exercise, probably the easiest and most reliable method of fat burning is to consume special foods that have the effect of turning up your thermogenic fires. One such substance is Pearson & Shaws's THERMOGEN TEA, which contains the natural herb ma huang which has been used in China for more than 5,000 years. When consumed as a tea or other drink, ma huang mimics the natural thermogenic action of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline.

Research suggests that it's important not to reduce your caloric intake while turning up your thermogenic fires because thermogenesis works best to reduce fat stores when it doesn't have to burn newly stored fat first. Given a choice between storing excess calories coming from fat, carbohydrates or proteins, the body prefers to store fat. THERMOGEN TEA works best with a diet high in protein and carbohydrates and with fat intake limited to 30% or less of total calories.

If you have a problem controlling your appetite, the answer may lie in your noradrenergic system. Noradrenaline is a natural thermogenic agent that the body manufactures from the amino acid phenylalanine. Phenylalanine is the main ingredient in Durk & Sandy's RISE & SHINE, BLAST, FAST BLAST, and BLAST CAPS. When consumed these formulas mimic the natural satiation signals sent to the brain, indicating that you've had enough to eat. As a result, you feel "full" and stop eating sooner. You can mimic the appetite satisfaction signals to your brain and fool it into responding as though you've eaten a lot. Try consuming phenylalanine supplements an hour or so before a meal and they'll help you feel fuller faster.

Smart Basics carries standardized Grape Seed Extract which we feel is the best available source of Proanthocyanidins (PACs), a unique class of bioflavonoids derived from either Grape Seeds (pips) or Maritime Pine Bark (Pycnogenol) that possesses potent antioxidant properties.

    > For many years those who could afford the higher price of Pycnogenol supple-ments have derived significant antioxidant protection against free radical damage. Pycnogenol, a freeze-dried extract prepared from pine bark, contains 85% proanthocyanidins. On the other hand, grapeseed extract contains 95% proanthocyanidins and is far more affordable than pycnogenol.

Pycnogenol and Grape Seed Extract were developed by Prof. Masquelier of Bordeaux, France, who first patented the grape pips extract in 1986 as an extension of his pine bark patent of 1951. After conducting extensive clinical studies Prof. Masquelier reported that, gram for gram, the grape pips extract contains more proanthocyanidins, and that "for practical reasons" he preferred to use Grape Seed extract for his studies.

Besides possessing a higher content of PAC than pine bark, the grape pips extract also has a higher content of gallic PAC esters, which, according to Dr. Masquelier render it superior to the pine bark extract in antioxidant potency, particularly for conferring protection against superoxide radicals and lipid peroxidation.

Since the grape seed extracts are more potent, better documented for bioavail-ability and safety, and have been adequately studied clinically, we believe that Grape Seed Extract is a superior product, and a quick price comparison shows that one would pay almost 400% more to derive a similar benefit from the pine bark extract.

We recently introduced Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw's latest updated version of Personal Radical Shield. Durk and Sandy have devoted over thirty years to refining their state-of-the-art, multivitamin, multimineral formula. In doing so they have developed an unparalleled formula that expresses best their unique combination of experience and knowledge for the design of state-of-the-art nutritional formulas.

By adjusting their already popular formula to reflect the latest research into human health, Durk & Sandy made several refinements to their Personal Radical Shield, including: 1) Increasing the vitamin A content from 5,000 iu to 8,000 iu per day; 2) Doubling the beta carotene content to 30 milligrams a day; 3) Increasing vitamin D from 400 iu to 1,000 iu per day; 5) Increasing riboflavin (vitamin B-2) to 100 milligrams per day; 6) Reducing vitamin B-1 (Thiamine) by about 25 percent; 7) Increasing manganese to 4 milligrams; 8) and increasing the amount of selenium from 110 micrograms to 170 micrograms. Personal Radical Shield is designed to be taken four times a day to best maintain serum levels of water soluble vitamins.

In early 1995 Smart Basics introduced the first of our growing line of Standardized, Guaranteed Potency Herbs. We believe our unique line of standardized herbs addresses the frequent concern that one can never be certain how much of a desired active ingredient is in any given batch of herb. Most of the standardization procedures, research, and manufacturing for Guaranteed Potency Herbs have been conducted in Europe by leading researchers with two main objectives: 1) identifying the active constituents of the herbs, and 2) being able to measure the presence of said active constituent in the final product.

Both of these concerns have been resolved by careful adherence to scientific research and processing protocols that guarantee that all Smart Basics herbs and herbal extracts contain the stated amount of active ingredients from batch to batch, bottle to bottle, and capsule to capsule.

Of the many Guaranteed Potency Herbs we offer, Kava Kava is easily one of our personal favorites. The use of Kava Kava can be traced back over 3000 years in Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia where it was the beverage of choice when relaxation was desired. More recently Kava gained popularity with the natives of Hawaii, Australia and New Guinea where it is used medicinally as well as recreationally.

Kava Kava root contains active kava-lactones which allow one to achieve a relaxed and calm state without side effects. Unlike tranquilizers, use of Kava can actually lead to increased cognitive function as reported in a 1993 article in Neuropsychobiology. Unlike sedatives, Kava improves mental functions instead of "dulling" the brain, and unlike alcohol or sedatives, it is extremely difficult to build up a tolerance to Kava (Clinical & Experimental Pharmacology, 1992, 18:571). Kava root is primarily used as a natural sedative and sleep inducer, and is also effective in reducing menstrual cramps. Kava is obviously not recommended for those who intend to drive or conduct any activity which requires fast reaction time.

In 1995 exciting new research in the war against insomnia and jet lag was triggered by the release of two studies by researchers at MIT and the Israel Institute of Technology that found that Melatonin can hasten slumber quickly without the addictive effects of drugs.

MIT reported that melatonin functions naturally as a sleep-inducing hormone, stating "Our volunteers fall asleep in five or six minutes on melatonin, while those on placebos take 15 minutes or longer." Subjects on melatonin also slept about twice as long as those on the placebo.

Researchers reported that melatonin is effective in treating jet lag, allowing the body to naturally adapt to the altered day-night cycles caused by travel. Among the reported health benefits of taking melatonin have been improved sleep, increased sex drive, better resistance to viral infections (as a result of improved immune function) increased energy levels, and prevention of the side effects of jet lag and other types of time disorientation.

Response to our introduction of the Natural Sex for Men and Natural Sex for Women formulas has exceeded our wildest expectations, and feedback from customers has been equally positive.

"I began to feel the effects within an hour-while I was on the bus after work! Now that was overwhelming - I was attracted to every man I saw."

We've noted that different people require different dosage regimens to achieve optimal results from the Natural Sex formulas. Some clients report that taking one or two capsules a day on a continuous basis leads to very satisfactory results. Others report that the daily regimen didn't work, but taking multiple doses on days they expect to have sex works very well.

One client reported taking 2 capsules a day of the Natural Sex for Men for two weeks without much effect. After discontinuing use for a week, he waited until he and his wife were celebrating their wedding anniversary. On that day he reports that he ingested 3 capsules in the morning and another 3 in the afternoon. His response to this approach "was unbelievable - both my wife and I were extremely pleased, and I felt as if I were a teenager again. We believe the Natural Sex products have rejuvenated our interest and our ability to fulfill our desires, and we will be regular uses from now on."

A female client reports that she experienced little effect when taking one capsule per day of the Women's formula. After a week she started taking 2 capsules a day, and on the fourth day noticed that her level of sexual interest was extremely high. Pleased that she finally noticed the desired effect from the formula, she took 2 more capsules later in the afternoon. "I started to feel the effects within an hour - while I was on the bus after work! Now that was overwhelming - I was attracted to every man I saw! Thank goodness I was going home to my husband. The following weekend was better than our honeymoon. Many thanks for a great product that really works."
